external flash memory modules for mobile phones with microSD (TransFlash) slots

Stik & Stor™ USModular introduced external flash memory modules for mobile phones with microSD (TransFlash) slots called Stik & Stor™. Nice idea for mobile phones, that don´t have real SD memory slots, but I wish mobile phone and PDA manufacturers would finally all use SD and get rid of all the other useless fand expensive lash memory formats!

PocketMod: the free disposable personal organizer

PocketMod One of the best ideas, I have seen in a long time: PocketMod lets you print out 8 pages per page including instructions to fold the page, so you get an 8 page booklet that you can take everywhere. Right now it uses Flash and some pre made templates, and for Windows users there is an app to turn PDFs into PocketMod booklets.

Reich ohne Geld (Rich without money)

Reich ohne Geld (Rich without money) Last Tuesday, the Austrian insurance company ÖBV had a book presentation for the new book from Alexander Giese called Reich ohne Geld, which is a German language book about beeing rich without money. The wonderful subtitle "Anleitung für ein unzeitgemäßes Leben" says it all. By the way: the German word "zeitgemäß", which roughly translates in English to "up-to-date" has become a bad word in the German language in the last few years, so finding a book giving advice for living "unzeitgemäß" can only be a good thing ;-)

degunking my Mac

degunking my Mac In HardDrive/Library/Application Support/ I found a GarageBand folder with 1.8GB! Even though I previously deleted GarageBand, because I have no need for it right now, I had no idea that there are Gigabytes of unnecessary junk on my hard drive. HardDrive/Library/Desktop Pictures is another 33MB! It really makes sense to do a clean install once in a while, then get rid of useless language and code files. A week ago my hard drive was filled with nearly 30GB, now I am at less than 10GB with no important documents missing! Now all my Mac stuff should fit on one double layer DVD+/-R or DVD-RAM!

great feature in MacOSX Mail

MacOSX Mail Account Info I found this feature by pure accident. On MacOSX 10.4.3 Mail I clicked "Command I" and this dialog popped up. It lets you delete single or all messages on your various mail servers. So no more need for some third party utilities to selectively remove those multi

megabyte files, that are clogging your mail server.

Mac Emulator on PocketPC VGA?

Mac Emulator on PocketPC I wonder, if anyone has tried out the Mini vMac for PocketPC 2003 devices on a PocketPC with VGA resolution? You could run thousands of great MacOS applications on your PocketPC in a truly portable way. And on CPUs with hundreds of MHz, those old Mac apps should run really fast. Imagine a full blown Hypercard environment running on your PocketPC. Or Macintosh Common LISP...

I wonder, if there will be a SheepShaver for PocketPC?

remove unnecessary language files from MacOSX Apps

smaller iTunes Somewhere in the comments of MacOSXhints.com I found a great hint about reducing the used disk space of MacOSX apps from dudemac: go to the "Get info" window of the application and select the languages pane. Now you can easily remove all the unnecessary language files from the application. My iTunes went from nearly 60 MB to around 25MBs. Hopefully we can soon get rid of unnecessary code (Intel or PPC depending on your Mac) as easily too.

Right now you need utilities like Monolingual to remove the Intel or PPC code.

Dell Axim X51v as a VNC client for MacOSX

Dell Axim X51v as a VNC client for MacOSX After a clean install of MacOSX 10.4 Tiger on my PowerBook 15" I installed PTvncWM5.arm.CAB on my new Dell Axim X51v. And believe it or not: I can control my Mac via VNC from my Windows Mobile 5 equipped Dell Axim X51v. Absolutely stunning! Too bad that Palm gave up developing great new hardware (and a multitasking OS!) years ago...

EyeTV2 finally supports EyeTV200 and EyeTV300 at the same time

EyeTV2 While officially you could control more than one EyeTV box at the same time with the EyeTV 1.x software from ElGato, it just never really worked for me. Now after installing the new EyeTV2 from ElGato, I can use my EyeTV 200 (analog cable TV) and EyeTV 300 (DVB-S) on one Mac at the same time.

Nokia 770 experiences until now...

Nokia 770 After a few days with the Nokia 770 now a short resume:

+ design, screen, weight, haptic, 3,5mm audio connector, standard

mini USB connector mounts the included RS-MMC as an USB drive on Macs, PCs...

- PDF could be really useful, if it supported portrait mode, right now you have to scroll endlessly

- connectivity is NOT perfect, my first tries with 2 WLAN hotspots failed, as well as the Bluetooth connection to my Nokia6630 mobile phone

- speed is Not an option, feels much slower than my MDApro, and also much slower than some very old Palms

- no keyboard (a slide out keyboard a la OQO or HTC would be great!)

- RS-MMC just SUCKS! Why can´t they use standard MMCs or SDs, some Nokia devices have MMCs, some RS-MMCs, even others now sport miniSD cards. What a mess!

- no standard Nokia power connector! For years all Nokia phones had the same round connector for charging purposes. Now some Nokias have the new thinner connector. Even though there are adapters, now there is one more part to loose. BTW: they already have a standard mini USB connector, why not use it for charging, too?

All in all: great try for a 1.0 release. If they keep improving the hardware and the software, the next Nokia Linux tablet might be a mega seller! Hint: SD/MMC slot, more RAM, faster CPU, portrait mode, standard Nokia power connector or USB charging!)
