Foreign tourists to be charged $10 "travel promotion fee" starting September 8
Directly from Gadling: Foreign tourists to be charged $10 "travel promotion fee" starting September 8. I am still trying to figure out, if this is a late April fools joke or an IQ test for tourists planning the travel to the US. BTW: a few years ago, the Balearic islands (Ibiza, Mallorca...) introduced a 1 Euro/person/day charge and within a few months they managed to reduce foreign tourists by more than 30 percent. So shortly afterwards they eliminated the charge again. Maybe they thought, that having tourists spending money there is not such a bad idea at all.

Der neue Mann von Welt, Geist schlägt Geld

If you understand German and like great writing, the new book from Helmut A. Gansterer, Der neue Mann von Welt, Geist schlägt Geld might be for you. It talks about the not so new fashion, that brains, wit, manners and style are more important than money. All for less than 20 Euros. Great investment!

Apple announces last year of christmas

First we heard, that Steve Jobs won´t do the next keynote and that Apple won´t attend Macworld expo 2010 in San Francicso. Then it was revealed, that Apple expo in Paris won´t happen in Paris in 2009 and now this:
Apple announces last year of christmas:
Apple today announced that this is the last year for Christmas. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, spoke at a joint press conference held with Santa Claus at the North Pole this morning. He announced: Apple has been honored to work with the North Pole the last several years to make Christmas possible, however, we have decided together that this is the last year for Christmas.
Apple is reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, Christmas has become a very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers. The increasing popularity of Apple’s Retail Stores, which more than 3.5 million people visit every week, and the Apple.com website enable Apple to directly reach more than a hundred million customers around the world in innovative new ways, throughout the year.
Apple has been steadily scaling back on holidays in recent years, including Valentine's Day, Columbus Day, President's Day and Grandparents Day in Japan.

Hans Janitschek died

On 2/21 Hans Janitschek passed away. According to Austrian newspaper Krone he broke down in front of the UNO headquarter in New York. He was 73. I had the honor and pleasure to know him almost exactly 17 years now, since I met him the first time in New York city in January 1991. I will miss him.
Just found out about the funeral: it will take place on 3/12 at 2pm in St. Martin near Lofer in Austria. The "Seelenmesse" will be read on 3/13 at 11am in the Jesuitenkirche, Dr. Ignaz Seipel Platz in Vienna, Austria.
Update: the New York Times has a guestbook, that is open for at least one year and at iCastNews.com you find quite a lot of the interviews he did including his farewell message.
